CAIRO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian army announced on Monday the killing of twelve militants in the country's North Sinai on the fourth day of a comprehensive anti-terror military operation.

In a statement, Egypt's army spokesperson Tamer al-Refaay said 92 other suspects were arrested and 60 targets used by militants were destroyed during Monday's operations.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said the army destroyed and seized 20 4x4 vehicles, 27 motorbikes, 30 hideouts and ammunition storehouses.

Egypt launched a nationwide counterterrorism operation on Friday to eliminate terrorism. The operation would cover large parts of Sinai, Nile Delta, the Western Desert, and borders with Libya.

The operation was launched as part of the efforts to reach the three-month deadline set by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to eliminate terrorism after the mosque attack that killed 310 people in the northern Sinai city of Arish in November, 2017.

On Sunday, the army said its forces killed 16 militants and arrested four others also in Sinai.

Egypt's army has been struggling to uproot the strongholds of militants, now belonging to the Islamic State branch in Sinai, since the ouster of the Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi, in response to mass protests against his rule in 2013.
