Moderate earthquake destroys some pagodas in Myanmar's Capital

YANGON, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Some pagodas suffered serious damages due to an earthquake on Thursday in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's capital, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Friday.

The 5.5-magnitude earthquake knocked down the diamond bud of a 55 ft (16.7 meters) high pagoda in Mau Lay Bin village, affecting the bottom of a 45 feet (13.7 meters) high pagoda in Moe Swe village and a 9 feet (2.7 meters) high satellite stupa collapsed in Ottara Thiri township.

A wall of village medical clinic in Shwe Nan Thar ward also collapsed due to the moderate earthquake.

With an epicenter of 19.2 kilometers of Nay Pyi Taw, the earthquake struck at 03:43:08 local time (211308 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers on Thursday.
