VIENNA, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Following the controversial opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, Palestine on Wednesday recalled its ambassador to Austria, Palestinian Representative Office in Vienna said in a press release.

The Office pointed out in the press release that with the participation of Austrian Ambassador Martin Weiss in an event on the eve of the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, Austria not only defied the requirements of the European Union, but also violated the international law and UN resolutions.

Ambassador Salah Abdel Schafi will leave Vienna on Friday for an indefinite period, it said.

The opening of the U.S. embassy on Monday was accompanied by bloody clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli army in Gaza Strip.
