Tokyo shares rise in morning on U.S. economic outlook

TOKYO, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks rose Wednesday morning after the U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell provided an upbeat assessment on the U.S. economy in his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 223.84 points, or 0.99 percent, from Tuesday to 22,921.20.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 12.97 points, or 0.74 percent, at 1,758.02.

Gainers were led by oil and coal product, precision instrument and transportation equipment issues.
