Ruling party lawmaker, 3 others killed in road accident in India

NEW DELHI, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A lawmaker from ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) was killed along with his two bodyguards and the truck driver Wednesday in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place after the car carrying the lawmaker collided head on with a goods truck at Kamlapur in Sitapur district, about 70 km north of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"In a tragic road accident here, a BJP lawmaker Lokendra Singh Chauhan was today killed along with his two bodyguards and driver of the truck," a police official said. "The lawmaker's vehicle collided with a truck on national highway 24 early in the morning."

Reports said Chauhan was on his way to Lucknow from his hometown Bijnore.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the death of Chauhan.

"Anguished by the demise of BJP MLA from Noorpur, Shri Lokendra Singh Ji due to an accident. His service towards society and role in building the BJP in Uttar Pradesh will always be remembered. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief," Modi wrote on twitter.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to an official report released recently, on an average India witnessed over 400 deaths in road accidents every day during 2016.
