RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Public prosecutors in Brazil have filed a civil lawsuit against former world No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic for alleged irregularities during a 2012 visit to Rio de Janeiro, according to local media reports.

Investigators allege that two companies were hired by the state of Rio to organize Djokovic's promotional duties via a fraudulent tender, Globo Esporte reported.

Authorities are aiming to recuperate 2.74 million reais (around 840,000 US dollars) in misappropriated public funds, the newspaper said.

During the visit, Djokovic inaugurated a tennis school in the Rocinha favela and played an exhibition match against Brazil's retired former world No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten.

Marketing companies Deki 10 Eventos and Ensino have been cited in the proceedings, as has Rio's former sport's secretary Marcia Beatriz Isidoro, according to reports.

A spokesperson for Djokovic was not immediately available for comment.
