GENEVA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday arrived in Switzerland for a two-day official visit.

Swiss President Alain Berset received Rouhani with military honors in Zurich on Monday, and the two presidents then traveled to Bern for an initial informal talk which will also be attended by Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and his Iranian counterpart Jawad Zarif.

Official talks will be held on Tuesday, a Swiss government statement said, adding that a number of agreements and declarations of intent are expected to be signed during the visit.

According to the Swiss government, discussions will focus on the latest developments regarding the Iran nuclear agreement, and the aim is to find ways of preserving the progress made as a result of the agreement and of ensuring the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region despite the U.S. decision to withdraw from it.

Other issues like the situation in the Middle East and the bilateral relations will also be discussed, the Swiss government said.

Iran is an important partner for Switzerland both politically and economically. The two countries adopted a road map to intensify bilateral relations in the February of 2016 when then Swiss President Johann N. Schneider-Ammann paid a visit to Teheran.
