Afghan forces repel Taliban attack in northern province

PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Security forces in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province have repulsed a Taliban attack, forcing the militants to flee after suffering casualties on Saturday, a provincial government spokesman said.

The Taliban militants, according to spokesman Mahmoud Haqmal, launched coordinated offensives on the central bazaar of Nahrin district in the early hours of Saturday, triggering gun battle which lasted for two hours and the attacking militants ran away after suffering casualties.

Three people including two militants and one police personnel had been killed and 13 others including seven militants and six police personnel sustained injuries in the fighting, the official added.

Taliban militants have not commented on the attack.
