KUNMING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Police in southwest China's Yunnan Province have detained nine drug trafficking suspects and seized 23 kilograms of heroin, authorities said Friday.

On July 24, police intercepted a car at a toll station in Changning County, Baoshan City after hearing that the dealers were planning to transport drugs from Myanmar to Sichuan Province through the county.

Two bags of heroin weighing a total of 23 kg in the car were seized and two suspects arrested, according to police in Changning county public security bureau.

Another seven suspects were caught in Baoshan and Chengdu, in Sichuan, later that day.

Yunnan is a major front in China's war against drugs, as it borders the Golden Triangle area known for drug production and trafficking.

A total of 5,648 suspects were arrested and more than 11 tonnes of drugs seized by police in the province between January and May.
