TRIPOLI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Health Ministry of the Libyan UN-backed government on Sunday declared alert to face possible cholera infections from neighboring Algeria.

The Monitoring and Investigation Department of the National Center for Disease Control of the ministry raised the level of readiness to face the possibility of cholera infections from Algeria to Libya, especially at border areas, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry called on medical centers and hospitals to "take caution from people coming from Algeria and check their health status for any possible symptoms of the disease."

Algerian health authorities announced on Sunday that there are more confirmed cases of cholera in northern provinces, according to official Algeria Press Service.

Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform Mokhtar Hasbellaoui said that there have been 49 confirmed cases out of 147 suspected who are getting medical treatment at hospitals in northern Algeria.
