LISBON, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese police said on Wednesday that they have seized more than half a tonne of fish unfit for consumption at a warehouse on Mira beach in Aveiro, in the north of the country.

In a statement, the GNR Aveiro Coastal Control Sub-station said that the seizure occurred during an inspection over the street sale of fresh fish on Tuesday.

According to the police, the military approached a 55-year-old man who was selling fish and tried to find out where the fish came from.

"The police detected a warehouse, where several fishes were kept without keeping the normal conditions of conservation, namely 352 kilos of horse mackerel, 142 kilos of mackerel, 72 kilos of sardines and about one kilogram of salema," the police said.

Police further said that the fish has been subjected to analysis, considered improper and eventually destroyed, thus avoiding any risk to public health.
