JAKARTA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed as floods and landslides struck West Sumatra province of western Indonesia, a disaster agency official said here Saturday.

Heavy downpours were blamed for the deadly natural disasters hitting the districts of Pasaman and Pasaman Barat since earlier this week, an official in charge of the national disaster management agency told Xinhua over phone.

The currents and landslides destroyed two bridges, scores of houses, some religious buildings and other buildings in the districts, according to him.

The disasters forced some 100 families to flee homes and take shelter in higher and safer grounds, he said.

Weeks earlier, the province was also stricken by landslides and floods, according to him.

Indonesia is frequently hit by floods and landslides during heavy rains.
