RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- A man was shot dead and another was seriously injured during clashes between rival football fans in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

The incident occurred before the Brazilian Serie A derby between Flamengo and Botafogo at the Engenhao stadium in Rio's northern suburbs.

Police said violence erupted as opposing supporters crossed paths in the neighborhood of Ilha do Governador, also in Rio's north.

The names of the victims, both Flamengo fans, were not disclosed, and police said they had launched an investigation.

Relegation-threatened Botafogo won the match 2-1, dealing a blow to Flamengo's hopes of winning their first top-flight title since 2009.
