VIENTIANE, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Lao cyclist, Thavone Phonasa made history on Wednesday after finishing third in the Bikingman Laos World race. The event covered a distance of 780km through northern Laos' Luang Prabang (about 220 km north of Lao capital Vientiane) and nearby provinces.

Bikingman Laos World is comprised of six different events, contested by 15 cyclists from Oman, France, Laos, Peru, Portugal, Australia and Ireland, the local daily Vientiane Times reported on Friday.

Jason Black from Ireland came in first, while Michael from Australia finished second. Thavone finished third with a personal best time of 62 hours and 24 minutes in the Ultra Distance Cycling category.

On the back of this momentous success, Thavone's next target is the 30th SEA Games taking place in the Philippines in November. He also plans to take part in the cycling event at the 11th National Games in Xieng Khuang province next year.

Last August, Lao cyclists competed in two cycling events at the Asian Games in Indonesia. In 2016, Lao cyclist Ariya Phounsavath competed at the 31th Olympic Games in Brazil, as well as the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia in 2017, but was unable to bring home a medal.
