14 including 8 militants killed in northern Afghan province

PUL-E-KHUMRI, Afghanistan, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Up to 14 fighters including eight militants and six security personnel, were confirmed dead as clash erupted on a road in the northern Baghlan province on Wednesday, head of provincial council Safdar Mohsini said.

The clash, according to the official, broke out after a group of Taliban insurgents attacked a security checkpoint on a road linking Baghlan to the neighboring Samangan province early morning, and security forces returned fire, forcing the militants to flee after leaving eight bodies behind.

Six security personnel had also been killed in the firefight, the official admitted.

Three security personnel and four Taliban insurgents were injured in the fighting, the official further said.

Taliban militants haven't commented.
